Smart Ways to Stay Cool

home outdoor air conditioner on gravelSummer's hottest days are upon us, and of course many homeowners across the country have air conditioning on their minds. Almost half the energy you use goes to cooling and heating your home, and this summer has been no exception. Here are quick tips to keep air conditioning costs low while staying cool:

Install a programmable thermostat. You can set the thermostat temperature according to time and day of the week, so you can save money when you're at work or sleeping. Using a programmable thermostat can save an estimated $100 every year.

Change your filter. Check, clean or change your filter every one to three months, depending on your system requirements. Dirty filters waste energy and can cause avoidable wear and tear. You can save up to $140 every year by sealing your air ducts properly -- with mastic, metal-backed tape, or aerosol sealant.

Seasonal tune-up. At the end of the season, clean the evaporator and condenser coils, check refrigerant pressure, and adjust the blower for proper airflow. This helps your system run at optimum efficiency next season, which translates to lower costs and a longer life.

If your air conditioning system is over 10 years old, consider replacing it with a newer model. Installing a new system can return approximately 75 percent of its cost if you decide to sell your home in a few years. Central air conditioning systems with the Energy Star label are approximately 25 percent more energy-efficient than standard equipment.

These money-wise ideas can help keep your home comfortably cool during the hottest time of year!
